Black & Gold Newz 7/5/99 - "...And we came home with a bag full of medals." |
| The Black and Gold Express ventured it's way into Brighton, Colorado for the AAU Regionals track meet. This was the qualifying meet to go to Cleveland, Ohio in August. As we arrived into the Brighton High School stadium, we quickly noticed the lack of competition as compared to other meets that we had participated in. The crowd was very, very small mostly consisting of parents and some coaches. The DATAC team just looked at each other and then sighed and shrugged it off. For we knew, that we were a "shoe-in" to qualify for Cleveland. The DATAC team as well as the other smaller teams were caught off guard by a sudden change in the order of events at the meet. Just as the team was able to take their seats, the first and second call for the 100m race was announced over the public announcement. The DATAC 100m runners quickly ran to the judge for the 100m race and checked in. The DATAC runners, Webster Askew, Johnathan Carey, Darian Gater, Eugene Pope, Shannon Waynewood, Jordan Pete, Jessica Finley and Aaron Whitaker took their places in the 100m race. They all tried desperately to stretch before their races. Once the races started with the midget and bantam categories, the crowd was amazed with the speed of the smaller DATAC runners as they breezed past the other runners in the heat. Since the attendance was so small, there was only one heat for each age group. From midget to young men and women, the DATAC runners won every race. Sometimes placing one, two, and three in a race. The day continued with the 100m, 200m, 110m hurdles, shotput, 400m, long jump, triple jump, high jump, 4x100m relay, and the 4x400m relay, with atleast one DATAC runner winning their respective races. All in all, this was a huge day for the Black and Gold Express. |

All Team DATAC members who participated in Brighton, CO meet qualified for Nationals! DATAC impressed the small Brighton crowd with their speed as they breezed past opponents right and left and go on to qualify for Cleveland! Every DATAC member in every race and events qualified with their final stats. After hearing this, DATAC Team Coach Robert Whitaker said, "This is very good for the DATAC team and I'm very proud of each and every member that competed in Brighton. However, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that our toughest competition was ourselves. So don't take this to the head too much, because in Cleveland I guarantee you it won't be this easy. And Utah, which is coming up in a little over one week, won't be easy as well. That's why we must practice hard this whole month of July so we can show the nation that DATAC is a force to be reckoned with". |
US Track & Field Meet in Utah to be in 10 days! The meet in Utah is only one week away and the DATAC runners are as ready and confident as ever! The event is to be held at Brigham Young University home of the Cougars from July 14th to July 17th. The DATAC runners have been training very hard trying to prepare themselves for the Region 10 Championships in Provo, Utah. DATAC's top runner Deon Waynewood has been training twice as hard to work his way back up to 100 percent from a tender hamstring that was injured in Boulder, CO. Other DATAC members going to Utah are training hard for the events in which they qualified in order to make a great impression. DATAC Coach said this about the DATAC runners in Utah, "This is a very big meet and it's cool that the DATAC team has a chance to run in this meet. Not only are we representing the state of Colorado, but we are representing the DATAC runners, coaches, parents, and supporters of this great track team." Let's wish the runners well in the upcoming Utah meet. |
